The DDS (DirectDraw Surface) format is an image format developed by Microsoft specifically designed for storing textures in games and 3D applications. DDS files are primarily used in game development because they contain compressed texture data that can be processed directly by the graphics card. This reduces loading times and makes modern games possible in the first place. Typically, DDS files contain textures for 3D models, so-called cube maps for environmental reflections, or mipmaps for different levels of detail (for example, depending on the viewer's distance). DDS files are often compressed using the S3 Texture Compression Algorithm (S3TC). This makes DDS files small and performant, but it also means that many programs cannot open them. Converting them to PNG is a good way to open DDS files without special software. This allows the files to be sent or shared, and the recipient can view them directly. PNG supports transparency and is lossless, so DDS files can be displayed faithfully.
